Here are some of the roofing questions that we hear the most.
How Should I Choose a Contractor?
If you are comparing roofing contractors, make sure to get a detailed quote from each. You shouldn’t necessarily go with the cheapest option, but cost should be a determining factor. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Ask around for references and visit past projects if you can. Make sure you choose a roofing contractor that provides you with an estimate that is detailed and broken down into an itemised list.
Is Metal Roofing Cheaper in the Long Run?
Metal roofing often costs more than asphalt or other materials up front, but it has its advantages, too.
Metal is incredibly lightweight and easy to install and it requires less engineering and building of structures to carry its weight. This means that it will often cost less to be professionally installed.
Metal roofing also lasts much longer than asphalt shingles and it will money on cooling costs during the hot summer months. Because it reflects the sun’s heat and keeps your home cooler, you won’t have to spend as much on your air conditioning!
Do I Need Consent from My Local Council for Roof Work?
Before you begin any type of construction work at home, it is a good idea to inform your local council.
Generally speaking, you will need to obtain council approval in you’re making any structural changes. For example, if you’re changing from tiles to concrete or metal, you may need council consent.
If you don’t have to make any large structural changes, then you shouldn’t need to obtain council consent. If you’re ever unsure, make sure you ask your contractor for advice.
What about Insurance?
Your contractor should be insured with a ‘Contract Works’ insurance or something similar, which covers renovation claims.
Your current House Insurance Policy may not cover claims related to renovations. Ask your insurance company about upcoming renovations to see if you need to get extra cover.
WHAT ARE MY METAL ROOFING OPTIONS?
There are many different types of metal roofing and they are available in a range of brands and colours.
